TRAVEL TIPS

Timing

To do San Polo justice requires at least the better part of a morning. If you want to take part in the food shopping at the Rialto Market, come early to beat the crowds. It closes at 1 pm. San Polo’s Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari contains some of the most beautiful and historically important paintings and sculpture in Venice; you’ll want to spend an hour there. If you are a Tintoretto fan, an hour will barely suffice to see the two floors of floor-to-ceiling Tintorettos in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. Also leave a few minutes to see the Scuola de San Giovanni Evangelista, the work of Pietro Lombardi, the most accomplished of Venice’s Renaissance architects.
