TRAVEL TIPS

Hours of Operation

Most banks in British Columbia are open Monday–Wednesday 9:30 am–5 pm and Thursday–Friday 9:30 am–7 or 8 pm. Some banks, especially in Vancouver, are open longer hours and also on Saturdays. All banks are closed on national holidays. Most banks (and some gas stations and convenience stores) have automatic teller machines that are accessible around the clock. Hours at museums vary, but most open at 10 or 11 am and close in the evening. Many museums are closed on Monday; some make up for it by staying open late on Wednesday or Thursday, often waiving admission.

Stores in BC are usually open Monday–Saturday 10 am–7 pm. Shops in the major cities and in areas frequented by tourists are usually open Sunday as well. Stores often stay open Thursday and Friday evenings and most shopping malls are open until 9 pm. Many supermarkets are open 7:30 am–9 pm, and some food and convenience stores in Vancouver are open 24 hours.

Holidays

Canadian national holidays are as follows: New Year's Day, Family Day (in BC it is the second Monday in February), Good Friday, Easter Monday, Victoria Day (the Monday before May 25), Canada Day (July 1), Labor Day (first Monday in September), Thanksgiving (second Monday in October), Remembrance Day (November 11), Christmas Day (December 25), and Boxing Day (December 26). British Columbia Day (first Monday in August) is a provincial holiday.
