TRAVEL TIPS

Planning Your Time

If you are in Hungary for a few days, you can still see plenty of Budapest. A stroll down Andrássy Avenue is in order to see the heart of classical Budapest, taking you past the gorgeous Magyar Állami Operaház (Opera House). Spend the afternoon at one of the thermal baths: the two must-see ones are Széchenyi in Pest and the Buda-side Gellért. Evenings are ripe for concerts, be it at the Franz Liszt Music Academy, the opera, or in a romkert (beer garden). Mornings are perfect for taking in the view from the Chain Bridge, then riding the funicular up to Budapest’s historic Castle District, which offers museums, cathedrals, and breathtaking views of the entire city. An afternoon in the Jewish district (District VII) will not disappoint. The Dohány Street Synagogue is the largest in Europe, and the more humble Rumbach Synagogue is right around the corner, as is the Kazinczy Street Synagogue. A trip to the central Market Hall and walk down Váci Street will fill you up with food and souvenirs. If you have time, take a day trip to the Danube Bend or Eger.
