TRAVEL TIPS

Train Travel

Ferrocarriles de Cuba operates the Caribbean's only comprehensive passenger-rail system, even if cutbacks have exacted a toll on services in recent years. (An influx of Chinese capital and locomotives is expected to reverse the decline in the near future.) Rail service spans the length of the island, with one line offering frequent service going east Havana–Santa Clara–Ciego de Ávila–Camagüey–Santiago, and another running west Havana–Pinar del Río a few days a week. Because they're the island's cheapest form of transportation, trains are popular with Cubans. Foreigners, however, pay inflated, though still reasonable, fares; the 15-hour, overnight Havana–Santiago train, for example, costs CUC$60 one-way. Tickets are sold by the eLadis travel agency inside most stations; it's in a separate building behind Havana's Estación Central. The railroad operates no website.
