Piazza della Repubblica

The square marks the site of the ancient forum that was the core of the original Roman settlement. While the street plan around the piazza still reflects the carefully plotted Roman military encampment, the Mercato Vecchio (Old Market), which had been here since the Middle Ages, was demolished and the current piazza was constructed between 1885 and 1895 as a Neoclassical showpiece. The piazza is lined with outdoor cafés, affording an excellent opportunity for people-watching.
